Tips from a Freelance Copywriter: Don’t Argue the SEO Strategy

Working as a freelance copywriter exposes you to many different people, each with their own unique projects and opinions. As you work with clients in all walks of life, you will find that a number of your clients have their own beliefs about what is the “right” SEO strategy. Examples of their individual SEO strategy beliefs:

• Putting keywords in the first and last sentences only.

• Putting keywords in the subtitles only.

• Putting keywords anywhere in the article without worry.

• Putting keywords only in the paragraphs that other websites put keywords.

• Putting keywords every other sentence without regard for density.

There are a number of different strategies that online “experts” have created. Depending on which SEO strategy the client first discovered, that is the strategy they are going to instruct you to use, believing it to be the right one.

There is No Correct SEO Strategy

Search engine algorithms are extremely complicated. No one in the entire world has actually broken the secret. Your clients will have their own strange SEO strategies, and you have two choices. You can either argue a better SEO strategy, or do as they request and let them deal with the consequences.

Freelance copywriters should do the latter, because the truth is that you do not know the “right” SEO strategy either. No one does. You may have a better idea about what works than your client, but the strategy you use is not the “correct” one because there is no such thing. At least not yet. The best advice is to simply comply with their request and let them believe what they want to believe. Unless they specifically ask for your expertise, arguing over the best course of action is a waste of time.
